Questions and Answers.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a method of applying a finish to almost any workpiece. The powder, which is in essence paint but in a dried powdered form, is applied to the workpiece via a gun. As the powder leaves the gun it is electrostatically charged, causing it to attract to the part being coated. Once the part has a uniform coating of powder, it is cured in an oven for between 12 and 20 minutes. The curing process turns the powder liquid, whereby it "flows" and creates a even coating on the workpiece.

What are the advantages to powder coating?

Powder coating provides a durable finish to any part, which is highly resistant to corrosion. Due to the way in which it is applied, it gives a more durable finish than traditional wet painting can. It is hard wearing, resistant to chipping and scratches, and can be applied much more thickly than solvent or water based paint.

Because the process doesn't require the use of solvents, it is more environmentally friendly, with far less VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) being released into the atmosphere than with traditional wet spray methods of finishing

What can be powder coated?

Anything that can withstand 200 Degrees Centigrade. Aluminium, cast iron, wrought iron, steel, stainless steel, cast aluminium, in fact almost any metal can be powder coated, cast or machined. A special powder primer can be used to seal cast parts before the base coat is applied, and clear powder lacquer can be used to preserve the clean bare metal look if preferred.
